About

As an article of faith, one of the pillars of faith is to believe in all the prophets of God. God conveys His message and relates His will through human prophets. They are the recipients of God’s word, this process is called al-wahy. God does not send angels to human beings nor does he open up the heavens for every individual to see, rather his mode of communication with human is through the angel which then transmit revelation to a chosen human, who is the best human of that time.
Blessed are those people who listen and follow the prophets, and destroyed are the ones who deny, mock, ridicule, fight against and belie the prophets. They faithfully delievered the message, without hiding, altering or corrupting it. Rejecting a prophet is equal to rejecting all of the prophets.
God did not leave any nation accept that he sent them a prophet. And all of these had the same job description, but just to different people at different times.
“And ask (O Muhammad) those of Our prophets whom we sent before you: ’Did we ever appoint gods to be worshipped besides the Most Merciful (God)?” [43:45]
These prophets were men and from amongst the people, their primary role was to call people back to the pure message of monotheism and a rejection of false gods be they idols, prophets or even angels who people have taken as gods besides Allah. The secondary role was to transform the society ethically, morally to fix the behaviours of people. Some nations were astray due to their arrogance, others due to undercutting people in trade, and others in homosexuality and many other vices and evil that the prophets at that time directly challenged and worked to overcome. So, the conclusion of the message of the prophets is twofold firstly monotheism and secondly social, political and economic reform.
Some of the prophets that are mentioned explcity in the Qur’an and the Sunnah are Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, David, Solomon, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon them, just to name a few. A general belief is held in those not mentioned by name, as God says:
“And, indeed we have sent prophets before you (O Muhammad), of some of them We have related to you their story, and of some We have not related to you their story…” [40:78]
